Work Space Event: 26 March
The University of Leeds and Institute for Experiential and Skills Based Learning (IESBL) will be hosting an event to dig deeper into all aspects of work, employability and experiential learning.
Moving beyond traditional placements
Tuesday 26 March, 1030 - 1600, University of Leeds Student Union
In this ‘work’ space part of IESBL’s commission, we’re looking to explore the work-integrated/employer-engaged milieu. The ways we can learn from, reframe and reposition ‘the placement’ in creative ways. The ways we can improve the equity, scale, and reach of work-integrated/employer-engaged learning opportunities, so that all students can meaningfully engage and benefit
The free event will take place on 26th March at the University of Leeds Student Union. The event will start at 1030 and finish by 1600. Through the day, we will hear from:
Students about their successes and frustrations with work related experiential learning
Practitioners on how they are approaching key questions such as pedagogy, access and value
Small and medium sized employers about what works in bringing them into the process
We will also host workshops to crystalise what we, as a sector, should do to open up more opportunities. As ever with an IESBL event, we’re inviting provocations to challenge ourselves to see if we’re on the right path. Are really positioning students at the front and centre of the process? How do we give all students the opportunity to access work related opportunities? What’s the scaffold we need to put in place? And are we close to implementing this? Please let Mark or Shantha know if you’d like to contribute a provocation.
Our aim is to bring together everyone who has a role to play in enhancing experiential learning and growing its impact. Please do extend this invitation to students, technicians and other practitioners in your network. Places are limited and priority will be given to cross university groups.
As with the civics event (co-hosted with the University of Westminster and National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement), our aim is to leave the room with concrete next steps. Steps which allow the sector can renew our vision for experiential learning and the future of universities alongside it.
Sharing is Caring
The IESBL is a free membership organisation. Help us to grow by forwarding on this email to colleagues who may find our work useful.
Sounds really interesting, sorry I can’t attend in person. Seen students have a mix of experiences certainly on our computing course and many didn’t get a placement. But there are other ways to gain experience when you can’t get a placement.
Can't make it for the 26th but we have been using a work based learning shell framework for over 20 years at the University of Chester. There are similar examples at other UK universities
